Coat of Many Colors

Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton

An inspirational song about the true meaning of wealth by Dolly Parton. She wrote this touching song in 1969 when she was traveling on a tour bus. As the song came to her, she didn’t have any paper nearby and had to write it on the back of a dry cleaning receipt. The song was released two years later, reaching number four on the charts.

In an interview she claimed that the song is still her favorite. It’s about how her mother stitched a coat for her out of rags that were given to the family. While her mother stitched it, she told Dolly about Joseph and his coat of many colors.

Though children made fun of her at school for wearing it, the coat was precious to Dolly and still is. It is on display in a museum at “Dollywood” along with the original receipt where she scratched out the words to the beloved song.

The song concludes with a powerful message that we are only as poor as we choose to be–a beautiful reminder to be thankful for our many blessings.
