Kix Holiday Snack Mix Recipe.
Years ago, an elderly neighbor gave me a recipe for some awesome snack mix. It has Chex cereal, but it also has Kix, along with bacon grease and celery seed, which gives it a delicious and unique flavor.
Now this recipe clearly isn’t low calorie. It’s more of a hearty winter mix to fight off that cold weather hunger. It’s the perfect snack for get-togethers, the holidays, football games, or just to enjoy with your family for a special treat.
I decided to make it for my family this New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately, I’d lost the original recipe through the years, but I remembered the ingredients, and so I’ve endeavored to recreate it. My initial version included one tablespoon of garlic and onion powder, which overwhelmed the celery seed and bacon flavor, and so I’ve reduced them by half. You might have to play with the recipe a bit to get the combination of flavors that’s just right for you.
Also this recipe makes a large amount–it filled my extra large cookie sheet and a roasting pan. If you have a small family, you may want to decrease it by half.
Here’s my final recipe:
Kix Holiday Snack Mix Recipe
7 Cups Kix Mix
7 Cups Corn Chex
2 Cups small pretzels or pretzel sticks
1 Cup bite-size bagel chips (optional)
1/3 Cup bacon grease (about 8 strips of regular bacon makes 1/3 cup)
6 TBS butter
1 14.7 Ounce can Mixed nuts
4 TBS Worchestershire sauce
1 TSP celery seed
1/2 TBS garlic powder
1/2 TBS Onion powder
Preheat your oven to 250 degrees
- Put cereals, pretzels, nuts, and bagel chips in a large roasting pan.
- Melt the butter in a microwave for a minute or until melted. Add bacon grease (must be melted), spices, and Worchestershire sauce. Stir.
- Slowly pour over cereal mix. Mix thoroughly. Spread out onto baking sheets. Bake for 45 minutes to an hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Let cool. Store in airtight containers. I hope you enjoy it!
