A beloved song from a beloved singer
This beautiful song is by Israel “Iz” Ka’ano’i Kamakawiwo’Ole. Israel was among the most celebrated Hawaiian performers of the 1990s. He’s known not only for his music but also for his kind and gentle spirit that shines through in his every song. He had a special way to touch and inspire others.
He tragically died in 1997 of an heart attack at only 38-years-old.
The Hawaii State Flag flew at half-staff on July 10, 1997, the day of Kamakawiwoʻole’s funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the Capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be awarded this honor, and the only one who was not a government official. Approximately ten thousand people attended the funeral.
His fans greatly miss him.
